Kathy's Story

Thanks for stopping by. I'm so glad you did.
I feel very lucky to be the award-winning author of a family memoir and four novels: Leaving Coy’s Hill, which was a finalist for the Massachusetts Book Award and selected by the New York Times as a notable book; Fill the Sky, finalist for the Foreward INDIES Book of the Year, finalist for the May Sarton Book Award, and winner of an Independent Press Award; The Hidden Life of Aster Kelly, PopSugar’s #1 pick for historical fiction in 2023; and This Much is True (coming in September, ‘26). My work has also appeared in Cognoscenti and Zibby Magazine. I served as Chair of the Board of GrubStreet, the nation’s premier creative writing center, from 2013-2023 and live on the South Shore of Massachusetts.
That’s the short and sweet of it, but who am I and how did I end up writing novels?
When I was a kid, I wanted nothing more than to be a writer, but I thought it required a “gift” that was offered only to a chosen few, a bit of magic that, for whatever reason, I didn’t believe had been sprinkled on me. It took me a long time to understand that writing is a craft. It takes practice and dedication and can be learned by anyone with an inclination toward stories who is willing to put word after word onto the page, delete what doesn’t work, relentlessly revise, and continue to write on. I have GrubStreet to thank for this lesson, and for its beautiful community of writers that support each other through what can sometimes feel like a harrowing task.
I started my career as an entrepreneur, and thought I was on a break between start-ups when I sat down to put my parent's turbulent love story on paper. That became my first book, Finding Home, A Family Memoir. I tried my hand at fiction next, and four books later, I haven't looked back. The chance to dive into the subconscious day after day is a gift. When the going gets tough, or I need feedback or a pep talk, I rely mightily on my amazing writing group (see photo). They keep me going.
When I’m not writing, I am revived by walks with an ocean view and the company of family and friends, ideally at a table overflowing with plenty of food, wine, and laughter.
Thank you for taking the time to visit. Please be in touch.
